Sleep Number

Sleep Number® is a marketing term that was coined by the Select Comfort® Corporation to describe the different firmness levels available on their various adjustable air mattresses. The basic premise behind a sleep number is the fact that each individual has his or her own body shape. As a result, each person needs a mattress that will meet his or her unique requirements for comfort and support.

To assist their customers in determining their initial sleep number, the Select Comfort® Corporation provides them with a starting guideline. The suggested rules of thumb are based on information such as height, weight, and sleeping habits. The number also varies based on the model of air mattress that the customer is thinking about purchasing.

Although originally conceived by Select Comfort® to illustrate the adaptability of their air mattresses, the term sleep number has since been expanded to generically describe all beds that have adjustable firmness controls. In addition, a large number of beds also employ the concept of dual sleep numbers. This technology provides couples with the ability to adjust their own sides of the bed as they see fit.
